Feathering

Picture 5 - The original photo was a scanned phot of my Grandfather in his World War I uniform. The background of the photo is plain and draws focus from the man himself, so I chose to feather this one and make it look like a more formal and contemporary photo. I cropped and auto color corrected, used elliptical marquee to choose selection of picture and cut out some of background, applied feathering of 8, copied to new file and pasted. Adjusted file size and saved. I was very pleased with the result since it now looks like a professional photo. I plan to print copies and frame them for my mother and aunts. (Photo of D.W. Using a Drop Shadow on Text

Picture 6 - I wanted a small graphic of my Grandfather's nickname to use on some of my family web pages, so I created new file, typed text of his nickname, tried different fonts until satisfied, and adjusted color. I had to used my help option to find how to create drop shadow because I was using an older version of Elements. I was pleased with the help available and found it easy to navigate and understand. I then played with drop shadows until I found one I liked. Saved for web. (Nickname "Uncle Son" used for text)

Using a Drop Shadow on an Image

Picture 7 - This is a good, professional photo, but when used on the web it loses some of its "oomph". I took the photo and cropped it, auto color corrected. I experimented with different drop shadows and found several I didn't like before I chose this one. It adds focus to the picture and makes it seem to pop off the page a little better. The soft blur drop shadow makes a huge difference for this one. I saved for web. (Picture of D.W. Clayton, taken early 1980s).

Blending Photos to Make a Collage

Picture 8 - My daughter took several photos of my grandfather's homestead after the house was torn down. They included the hand pump, the chimney that remained standing, the old outhouse, and the tree that is gnarled. I took those photos and arranged them around an older picture of the house itself when it was still standing and in good condition. The house was very important to me and a part of our family's history. I had to crop and adjust color on all photos, and then resize them for the best effect when placed around the collage. It took a good bit of trial and error to get it just right. I also played with background effects and colors until I found one that seemed to complement the photos and reminded me of the Spanish moss that grew in the trees around the house. Again, I was pleased with the result, and plan to print and frame this to give as gifts to several cousins who also have fond memories of the homestead. (Pictures of Clayton homestead, house built in mid-1800s.)
