Change Image Size

Picture 1 - The original photo was a scanned 8" x 10" photo that was a copy of the original. Scanned photos are generally enormous in pixel size and would never be appropriate for web pages. I took the scanned photo and rotated right, cropped, auto color corrected, resized to 220 pixels width (Elements automatically adjusted height). The finished photo is appropriate for the web. Tip: Since I publish my family photos on the web and print them out, I keep two copies, one original for printing, and one compressed for the web. Cropping and Saving for Web

Picture 2 - The original photo was huge and had to be compressed. It also drew focus onto the dirt road itself rather than the beauty of the tunnel of trees above it. I cropped out part of the dirt road to focus on the tunnel and curve at the end of this section), resized to 220 pixels width (Elements automatically adjusted height) (Son Clayton Road)

Changing Brightness/Contrast/Hue

Picture 3 - This is a scanned copy of a copy of an original photo. The original was quite aged and yellow/orange in color, which made it harder to see features on the faces. I rotated the image right, cropped out the ragged edges, and then adjusted brightness and contrast (increased both), adjusted saturation (decreased) to eliminate old orange/yellow color). It took some trial and error to get the best color to clear up the photo without making it too light or too dark. I resized to 220 pixels width (Elements automatically adjusted height). (Frank Hall Clayton, Douglas (small boy), Isom and Miranda Clayton, Ella Clayton, Jeannie (Mrs. Jim Culpepper), Anna (Indiana Farmer) Clayton, and Arrie Sowell (Mrs. Ed., cousin). Taken in late 1880s or early 1890s.)

Adding Text to a Picture

Picture 4 - This is a scanned photo of my Grandfather's World War I Soldier's Pay Book. The original book is very small and yellowed in color due to age. It is also hard to read because of the ink handwriting that has faded. I want to include it on my family photos page, but it will need a description with it, so I chose to add the text description on the photo itself. I cropped the photo (left room for text at top), added the text description, adjusted color of text to black, auto color corrected picture (this eliminated most of the yellow color and darkened the ink writing, and adjusted file size.
