Hi Candy

It is nice to finally meet a Clayton "kin" other than my immediate ones! I am descended from Daniel W. Clayton through his son, Milledge G. Clayton, who married Sarah Ann Green. Their son, Daniel Wilson Clayton, married Laura Jane Lindsey and their daughter, Annie Gertrude Clayton, married Laudius D. Meeks. Milledge Clayton fought in the CW and moved to Suwannee County, FL where he died January 15, 1903. I have extensive information on this family.

I received some information from a relative that I don't have handy but it was certified by a Notary Public (for what good that does!) and it said the Isham was the father of Daniel W.(ilson) Clayton. BTW, Milledge Clayton was born March 12, 1836 in Barnwell District, SC. He was a twin to Miler H. Clayton. Miller remained in Georgia but Milledge and his brother Mandoss V. Clayton, moved to Suwannee County, FL. My great aunt, the daughter of Annie Gertrude Clayton and Laudius Meeks, distinctly remembers "Uncle Doss" and "Uncle Miller" She never knew Milledge as he died in 1903 and Annie and Laudius did not marry until 1899 in Suwannee County.

I had hoped that a will or something significant would surface to tie Daniel W. Clayton to Isham of SC but I have not found it yet. Just family

stuff and maybe a Bible or two but nothing of an official document that I have put my hands on. I don't trust Huxford all the time either even

though I am a member and know Boe Williams very well. BTW, I live in Daytona Beach and am 45 years old. If it is any consolation to you, Milledge and Sarah Ann Clayton had Daniel Wilson, ISHAM, Napoleon H.(uncle NEP) m. Catherine C., Lenora m. William E. Harrell, Julia m. Danil N. Howard, Oceona, Lillian m. Charles Allen Griffin ( aunt Lillian), THOMAS BROOKS Clayton m. Susan M. Howard, Milledge "Alvin" m. Mary Warner (uncle Alvin or uncle Al)

I will go and get those other papers and let you know what it is all about but this should get us started.

Again, nice to meet you and hope we can help each other solve some of our mysteries!!!

Valdosta Times Feb. 23, 1889

Having finished her work she now rests.

Mrs. Sarah Prescott, nee Brooks, consort of Jesse T. Prescott, Sr., was born in

Barnwell District, S.C., on the 16th day of August, 1818. Her father died

leaving Sarah an infant six months old. Her mother afterwards married Isham

Clayton, who moved to Lowndes County, GA., while Sarah was quite young,

settling near Ocean pond where Sarah was raised and grew up to womanhood, and

on the 30th day of August, 1840, she was married to Jesse T. Prescott.

Although she had lived to see her three score and ten years, she was taken with

that most dreaded of diseases, consumption, which terminated in death on the

morning of the 16th inst., aged 70 years and 6 months. She was noted for her

independence and unvarnished style and will power. Of a truth it can be said

of her that in her there was no guile. No Phariseeism or hypocrisy could be

found in her large and generous heart. Although she never attached herself to

any Church, she can truthfully on arriving at the gates of the Celestial City

sing:

"In my hands no prize I bring; - Simply to Thy cross I cling."

Aunt Sarah, as she was called by all who knew her, was beloved by all for her

straight forward way of doing business. While she was not one of those loud

professors of religion, she preferred the position of the poor Publican, her

trust was alone in Jesus, who is an all sufficient Saviour. She believed in

qui transtutit sustinet. Just before she expired she said to those around her

that God had pardoned her sins. This sad dispensation of Providence has taken

from our midst one of the most affectionate mothers on earth, and a better

neighbor never lived is said by all who have lived in reach of her. But alas!

she is no more here, her pure gentle spirit has been called by the Master to

its rest beyond the beautiful river, where her sanctified spirit can join the

Heavenly Choir in singing "Crown Him Lord of All." Her mortal remains were

interred in the cemetery at this place on the 17th inst., in the presence of

nearly three hundred persons, all friends, and many relatives, all deeply

sympathizing with the bereft family, consisting of husband, four sons and one

daughter. May Heaven's blessings ever rest upon her loved ones. The Rev. Mr.

Brown, of the M.E. Church, conducted the religious services. J.E.S.

Statenville, Ga., Feb. 18, 1889.

Additional Comments:

The writer of the obituary, J.E.S., was James E. Sharpe, a family friend. The

two families were connected by marriage when Sharpe's son married the

Prescotts'granddaughter. Jesse Prescott's middle initial was P, not T. Their

children were Thomas Moses, Elijah J.W., Hiram D.,Echols, and Amanda M. "Aunt

Daught" Prescott.

(Last Will and Testament of Jesse P. Prescott, Sr.)

STATE OF GEORGIA, LOWNDES COUNTY:

I, Jesse P. Prescott Sr., being of sound and deposing mind and memory, and being desirous to settle my worldly affairs while I have strength so to do, do make and publish this, my last will and testament, hereby revoking all wills heretofore at any time made by me.

First. Committing my soul to God who gave it, and in whom I put my trust, I desire that my body shall be buried in my old family lot at Statenville Cemetery in Echols County Georgia.

Second, I desire that just debts shall be first paid out of any money I may leave; should I leave no ready cash, I direct my Executor hereinafter named to pay my debts, if any, out of such of my estate as he may deem best, taking in consideration the interest of my family.

Third, I give, bequeath, and devise unto my worthy and beloved wife, Elizabeth D. Prescott, my home place in the town of Lake Park, Lowndes County Georgia, situated on lots 4 and 2, in block 5, fronting Marion Avenue 110 feet, and running back -- feet to a plank fence dividing my lands from the Misses Carter lands, with all the stock, tools, impliments, machinery and provisions of all sorts, also all household and kitchen furniture, and bedding, including the parlor organ, and all other things that may be in and about my said home

and premises, for and during the term of her natural life.

Fourth. I give and bequeath unto my granddaughter, Mrs. Jimmie Clayton, that part of lot of land number eighty-seven (87), in the 16th district of Echols County, Georgia, lying north of the Sol Branch (a branch running east and west through said lot of land) containing one hundred and twenty-give acres, more or less, except a small portion situated in the northeast corner of said lot heretofore sold to James T. Corbett by me. I give this piece of land to my granddaughter, Jimmie Clayton, because her home is the home of her mother, the widow of my deceased son, as well as for her kindness to my daughter, A.M. Prescott, and is often the home or resting place of her brothers.

Fifth. I give and bequeath to my daughter, Miss A.M. Prescott, my office and fixtures therein, as well as the lot whereon it stands, being the East third of lot 12, in block 15, in the town of Lake Park, fronting 33 1/2 feet on Railroad Avenue, and running back North 30 feet. This I desire her to keep for rent for her especial benefit.

Sixth. The remaining portion of my estate consisting of notes and accounts, judgments and fi.fas., bills of costs etc., I give to my three sons, T.M. Prescott, H.D. Prescott, and W.E. Prescott, share and share alike.

Seventh. I desire and direct my executor hereinafter named, that he as soon after the death of my present wife, Elizabeth D. Prescott, as it is convenient for him to do so, to take charge of that part of my estate here given to my said wife as a life estate, to sell the same to the best advantage (the children agreeing with him) and divide the proceeds of the same between my four children, to wit: T.M., H.D., W.E. and A.M. Prescott, share and share alike, having given the widow of my deceased son, Nan Prescott, through her daughter, Mrs. Jimmie Clayton, an equal portion to that given my other four children mentioned in this section of my will.

Eighth. I hereby consistute and appoint my friend, James T. Corbett, Executor of this, my last will and testament, leaving in the Citizen's Bank of Valdosta, a sufficient amount of cash to pay him for his services and the burial expenses, which he is hereby authorized to receive from said bank.

J.P. Prescott (Seal)

Signed, sealed, and made public by the above J.P. Prescott as his last will and testament, in the presence of us, who, at his request, in the presence of each other, have signed our names as witnesses thereto.

This 30th day of April, 1897. John Clayton, W.T. Corbett, J.W. Howell

Additional Comments:

Mr. Prescott died Dec. 23, 1903 and was buried according to his instructions.

The A.M. in the will, Amanda Malissa, was known to everyone as "Aunt Daught."

The granddaughter, Jimmie Clayton, was the child of Elijah J.W. Prescott, who

died in 1890.

______________

4/24/04

Candy,

I'm just home to Kentucky after a week of genealogy research in SC--drove 9 hrs from Charleston to Lexington today--and am too brain-dead to be much use tonight. I do have Jesse and Sarah Prescott on the 1870 census in Echols with 2 children, Malissa (Amanda Malissa) and Echols. This is district 16 and I wrote p. 24 in the margin which I thinks means image 24 in Ancestry images. If you asked me this question before, I must have misunderstood. Jesse owned a large area of land that was partly in SE Lowndes and partly in SW Echols. The family mainly lived in Statenville but the younger Dr. Jesse lived and had his medical practice in Lake Park. All of it was Lowndes at one time. The Isham Claytons lived near Ocean Pond, which is in Lake Park now.

Thanks for the info on Almenia.

Rose

"Robert Brooke, son of Thomas and Mary (Foster) Brooke, was born 3 Jun

1602 in Battel, Hastings, Sussex, England, and died 20 July, 1663, inBrooke

Place, Battle Creek, MD. He married (1) 25 February, 1627, in Battel ,Hastings, Sussex, England, Mary Baker; and he married (2) 11 May, 1 633,in Hastings, England, Mary Mainwaring. He and Mary Baker had fourchildren, Baker, Mary, Thomas and Barbara. Mary Mainwaring, daughter ofRoger Mainwaring, DD, and Dean of Worcester. Mary was born at St. Gilesin the Field, London. Robert and Mary Mainwaring had elev en children:Charles, Roger, Robert, John, William, Mary, Ann, Francis, Basil (died ininfancy), Elizabeth and Henry (twins and the only of their children whowere born in Maryland."

"The accounting of the children of this last family were given byRoger,

second oldest, in his own handwriting. Charles I, King of England, issaid to have stayed at the home of Robert Brooke, and his wife, MaryMainwaring, just before the Battle of Newberry in 1644, during the CivilWar in England.

"Robert Brooke first settled at De la Brooke Manor on the west bank ofthe

Patuxent in 1650. By 1652 he had started another Manor directly acrossthe

river, which he named Brooke Place. He moved there in 1653, leaving De la

Brooke Manor to his oldest son, Baker, who was named Lord of De la BrookManor. For a brief period in 1652, Robert Brooke was Acting Governor ofMaryland, after becoming President of the Maryland Provincial Council. He was also appointed Commander of the newly proclaimed County ofCharles. No doubt he had a great deal to do with the naming of CharlesCounty, since he had been a close friend of Charles I . Robert Brookehad received his education at Wadam College in Oxford, matriculatingthere 28 April, 1618. There is a deed in the Land Records in the StateArchives of Maryland of 250 acres originally patented 8 June 1649 toRobert Brooke, the Progenitor of the Brooke Family in Maryland, and latersold by him to William Evans of Newtown in St. Mary's County. Thewitnesses to this deed were his sons, Charles and Roger Brooke. The landwas described as lying on the east side of St. Clement's Bay, which wouldbe Newtown Neck, adjacent to where his son, Robert settled after hismarriage to Elizabeth Thompson, i n 1656. Robert Brooke, was the son ofThomas Brooke of White Church , England, and his wife Susan Foster, thedaughter of Sir Thomas Foster, according to Raphael T. Semmes, author of"The Maryland Semmes and Kindred Families."

"Robert Brooke was born, according to his family record "at London ,3rd June, 1602, being Thursday, between 10 and 11 of the clock in theforenoon being Corpus Christi Day." He matriculated at Wadham College,Oxford, 28 April 1618, receiving the degree of B. A. 6 July 1620, andthat of M.A. 20 April 1624 (Foster, Alumni Oxonienses). A man uscriptcopy of the VISITATIONS OFHAMPSHIRE (1634) in the British Museum hasunder his name the note "this Robert is a minister." He thus records hisfirst marriage: "Mary Baker, born at Battell in Sussex , Robert Brookeand Mary Baker intermarried 1627, the 25th of February, being St.Matthias' Day and Shrove Monday." This lady was the daughter of ThomasBaker of Battle, Esq., Barrister-at-law, and Mary his wife, daughter ofSir Thomas Engham of Goodneston, Kent. A pedigree of the Baker family,as entered at the Visitation of 1634, is published in Berry's SUSSEXGENEALOGIES. Mary Baker died in 1634, probably at the birth of herdaughter Barbara, and her husband, Robert Brooke, re-married thefollowing year. "May the 11th, 1635, Robert Brooke (aforementioned) wasmarried to mary, second daughter of Roger Mainwaring, Doctor of Divinity& Dean of Worcester, wh: Mary was born at St. Giles-in-the-Fields,London."

"Roger Mainwaring, the father of Robert Brooke's second wife, subsequently became Bishop of St. David's, and came into collision withParliment through his over zealous advocacy of the royal prerogative .Robert Brooke arrived in Maryland 30 June, 1650, with is (second ) wifeMary, his ten children, Baker, Thomas, Charles, Roger, Robert , John,William, Frances, Mary, and Anna Brooke, and twenty-eight servants, alltransported at his own cost and charge (Md. Land Office, L ib. 1, fol.165-166; Davis' DAY STAR, p.74). With his two sons Baker and Thomas, hetook the oath of fidelity to the Proprietary, 22 Jul y 1650 (Md.Archives, iii, 256). A commission had been issued to him , dated atLondon, 20 September, 1649, as commander of a county to be newleyerected, and he had also a separate commission of the same date as memberof the Council of Maryland. He took the oath of office in the lattercapacity 22 July 1650 (Md. Archives, iii, 237, 240, 2 56). A new county, called Charles County, was duly erected and Robert Brooke was constitutedits commander, 30 October 1650 (Md. Archives , iii, 259).

"When Maryland was reduced, in 1652, by the ParlimentaryCommissioners, he was placed at the head of the provisional councilinstituted by them, and served in this capacity from 29 March until 3July 1654, when an order was passed revoking his commissions andnullifying the act erecting the county, in place of which a new countywas erected called Calvert County (Md. Archives, iii, 308). According tothe Brooke family record: "He was the first that did seat the Patuxent, about twenty miles up the river at De la Brooke, and had one son there ,born in 1651, called Basil, who died the same day. In 1652 he removed toBrooke Place, being right against De la Brooke; and on the 28th ofNovember, 1655, between 3 & 4 o'clock in the afternoon had two children,Eliza and Henry, twins.

"He departed this world the 20th day of July 1655, and lieth buried atBrooke Place Manor; and his wife, Mary Brooke, departed this life the29th November 1663."

The careful family record kept by Robert Brooke names a number ofrelatives who served as God-parents to his children, and furnishesabundant evidence as to his connection with the English parent stoc k.This interesting family record is published in Tyler's MEMOIR OF ROGERBROOKE TANEY (pp. 22-25), where by an accidental omission the death ofRobert Brooke is placed in 1663. The date is correctly given inmanuscript copies preserved by the family."

(The article concludes by naming the 15 children of Robert Brooke andhis two wives including some statistical information concerning them.)
